Its origins lie between the <strong>Fertile Crescent<\/strong> and <strong>Mesopotamia<\/strong>. <strong>Domestication<\/strong> of the tree took place around <strong>5000 BC in the Middle East<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>Olive trees<\/strong> and <strong>olive oil<\/strong> were already known and used by the <strong>ancient Egyptians<\/strong>, <strong>Sumerians<\/strong> and <strong>Phoenicians<\/strong>, however, olive cultivation largely developed on the island of <strong>Crete<\/strong> during the <strong>Minoan civilisation<\/strong> (c. 3000\u20131100 BC). From there, the tree spread throughout the <strong>Mediterranean<\/strong>. The <strong>Greeks<\/strong>, who regarded the olive as a <strong>divine gift<\/strong>, began cultivating it around <strong>2000 BC<\/strong>. It later became central to<strong> Roman economy and culture<\/strong>, with the Romans refining <strong>cultivation techniques<\/strong> and expanding olive growing across all <strong>provinces of the Empire<\/strong>, including <strong>Spain<\/strong>, <strong>North Africa<\/strong> and <strong>Gaul<\/strong>.
